A plethora of cameo characters from older games can be seen during the "Joke Ending". These characters include Harry and Heather Mason, Walter Sullivan, James and Mary Sunderland, Mira the dog, Alex and Josh Shepherd, Lisa Garland, Cybil Bennett, Murphy Pendleton and Travis Grady. There are also lots of mentions on the town's locations and oddities.
In an April Fool's Day trailer, Altaïr from Assassin's Creed was shown fighting Metal Gears. At the end of the trailer, he removes his robe to reveal Solid Snake. Though seen as a joke at the time, Altaïr's robe can still be unlocked in game.

Octoman from the F-Zero series appears as one of the bosses in the game and a member of the Anglar Empire. His design is more reminiscent of his appearance in F-Zero: GP Legend.
Trish, the Fairy from previous Persona games, makes a cameo appearance in Persona 3 as the host of a TV show called "Who's' Who" in which she interviews characters from past games.

In Ebon Keep, Cecil Harvey from Final Fantasy IV will appear as a store owner. Ebon Keep's theme on the official soundtrack is also called "Cecil's Town." He will even make reference to his adventures on the moon, becoming a paladin, and fighting Zeromus, hoping that the player will have heard of him.

Olaf makes an appearance as a secret character in Rock 'n Roll Racing. Baleog appears on several billboards advertising "Viking Cola" on Bogmire.
Erik, Baelog and Olaf make a cameo appearance in World of Warcraft as NPCs.

Katsuhiro Harada, producer of the Soul Calibur series and the Tekken series appears as a bonus character in a Quick Battle challenge, using the Devil Jin style moveset. Defeating him will unlock the achievement "Pursuit of Obsession".
His theme music is from the Cathedral stage of Tekken 5, his appearance is very similar to Heihachi from Tekken, and his profile image shows him without sleeves, even though in-game he wears a longsleeved gi.
His name appears in game as "Harada_TEKKEN" - the same as his Twitter handle.
