Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones

During the intro, the Empress will recount the events of the last game, and how they lead to this one. During her narration, she will say "Some believe when the Prince journeyed to the Island of Time to escape death, he returned alone, the amulet destroyed, the Dahaka appeased, the Empress dead. The Prince was free at last. But, this is not how it happened." This line is actually a reference to the bad ending of the previous game, Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within, in which those events occur.

Casino Paradise Zone holds a few little nods to both previous games in the series and the real world. There is a welcome sign in the beginning of the level, which might be a reference to the Sonic the Hedgehog prototype and its welcome sign in Green Hill Zone. A platform resembling the "Barrel of Doom" from Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Carnival Night Zone is also present, and the background bears a strong resemblance to Walt Disney World Resort's Magic Kingdom at night.

On the Citadel, the player can interract with a vending machine that dispenses a popular soft drink named Tupari. When interracted with, the machine will play a number of slogans promoting Tupari, one of which is "Tupari brings your ancestors back from the grave!"

This appears to be a reference to a popular advertising urban legend regarding the real life soft drink Pepsi, in which its Pepsi Generation slogan "Come alive! You're in the Pepsi Generation!" was supposedly misinterpreted in Chinese (or other Asian languages) as "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave."

Dogmeat is an Australian cattle dog, and was modelled after the dog from Mad Max 2. He is also named after the dog from "A Boy and His Dog", a 1975 post-apocalyptic movie.

The two enemies, Skagzilla and Mothrakk, are references to the Kaiju from the Godzilla movies, Godzilla and Mothra respectively.

The boss Plantera's name is inspired by the band Pantera, which Creative Director Cenx says is her favourite band. Plantera drops an item called The Axe, which looks like an electric guitar often used by the band.

Minh T., the flower loving Toad in Toad Town Garden, is named Lip in the Japanese version. Lip was also the name of the flower fairy protagonist in the SNES game, Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack internationally). Both characters share a love of flowers and even share the same yellow, green and pink colour scheme.

Attachment In the course Ribbon Road, before you start racing there is a poster that shows a Lakitu in a Kung fu pose that says "Dragon Driftway The Movie, Kung Fu Lakitu, coming Spring 2015". The poster is a reference to the Dreamworks animated movie and TV series Kung Fu Panda. Also, Lakitu's Kung Fu pose was originally seen in another Mario Kart 8 course, Dragon Driftway, which is what's implied on the top of the poster.

If the player doesn't hit the ball for a while, Boo will appear with helpful information and tips. If the player doesn't hit the ball for a while longer however, Boo will then taunt them with various messages, including:

•Hey, are you even there anymore?
•Hey, you've got to hit the ball to play!
•What!? You want to go the the clubhouse?

Attachment The Underchomp is based on the legendary hell-hound Cerberus, a giant three-headed dog who guarded the gates of Hades in Greek mythology. In one story, he was put to sleep by the music of Orpheus, which inspired Piccolo's music putting the Underchomp to sleep.
